Investment summary

Volt’s pre-feasibility study (PFS) on Namangale outlined a 170ktpa operation feeding a high-purity graphite concentrate into the lithium-ion battery and expandable graphite end-markets. Relative to six of its most advanced peers, Namangale has a high ranking in terms of estimated operating margins and concentrate purity. Subsequently, Volt has announced plans to develop the project in two stages. Stage 1 will commence in Q417 to produce 10-20ktpa graphite. This will then be expanded in modular fashion from 2020, to 170ktpa, in Stage 2.

Industry outlook

Volt has secured a binding off-take agreement with US-based NanoGraphene, which we view as de-risking the product for use in high-tech applications. It has also reached agreement with China's Aoyu Graphite to use the latter's excess spheroidisation capacity to generate samples for inspection by prospective customers. On the basis of its PFS, we value Volt at A$264m, or 27c/share, on a fully diluted basis, using a 10% discount rate and a US$1,684/t concentrate basket price.
