Investment summary

YouGov’s strategy to focus on its scalable products and services is paying back handsomely in revenue growth and margin improvement. Margin is being further boosted by the reorientation of custom business to greater use of data already held in the Cube, the group’s multi-dimensional database. We edged our FY18 and FY19 earnings’ forecasts up 4-7% to reflect the strong H1. £21m of net cash (end January) is being used to fund continuing investment in panel, applications and new markets. It also supports a progressive dividend and allows for bolt-on acquisitions. The premium rating reflects the growth record and positive outlook.

Industry outlook

Global MR continues to go through an extended period of change, fuelled by vast quantities of data leading to a proliferation of tools to manipulate it. This has brought in influential new players to the market, some from the technology angle, but also global consultancy and tech sector majors, and from in-house teams at client companies. The GDPR comes into effect in May and will alter the system of consumer consent. YouGov has a permissioned model in which panellists give explicit consent to how their data will be used. This provides a competitive advantage, including over tech companies such as Facebook and Google.
